Chidambaram is being investigated by the CBI and ED in the INX Media case and the Aircel-Marxis case. It is alleged that in 2007, as Finance Minister, he signed off on a huge infusion of foreign funds into INX Media at the instance of his son Karti, who allegedly received kickbacks for playing his part.

Karti Chidambaram too accompanied the two leaders. Talking to the media after the meeting he said, “My father and my family are extremely grateful to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former PM Dr Manmohan Singh for visiting him today and for extending their support. It’s a big boost for us in this political fight.”

P Chidambaram also tweeted about the meeting. He said,  “I have asked my family to tweet on my behalf the following: I am honoured that Smt Sonia Gandhi and Dr Manmohan Singh called on me today. As long as the @INCIndia party is strong and brave, I will also be strong and brave.”

The Congress had accused the BJP-led central government of indulging in political vendetta.

P Chidambaram and his son Karti were named by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who owned INX Media at the time and are currently in jail in connection with the murder of Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter Sheena Bora.
