Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor courted controversy when he, on Tuesday, posted a tweet over an image of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wherein the latter is seen preparing to take the holy dip in River Ganga at the ongoing Kumbh Mela.
Tharoor, the Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram, posted a Hindi tweet which reads, “गंगा भी स्वच्छ रखनी है और पाप भी यहीं धोने हैं। इस संगम में सब नंगे हैं! जय गंगा मैया की! (You want to keep the Ganga clean and also wash your sins here. Everyone is naked in this Sangam. Jai Ganga Maiya Ki).”

Textiles Minister Smriti Irani reacted sharply to Tharoor’s tweet.
“For Shashi Tharoor to make a statement which tantamounts to a religious slur. Question needs to be asked of Rahul Gandhi who strategically wears a ‘Jenau’ only when there are polls, as to why he has allowed this attack on beliefs of millions of Hindus across the world,” said Irani.
UP Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said, “How will he (Shashi Tharoor) understand the importance of Kumbh? The atmosphere he’s in, the culture he has been brought up in, he doesn’t understand this. You people have committed a lot of misdeeds, take a holy dip in Kumbh and you might be able to repent for your sins.”
Yogi Adityanath held a cabinet meeting at the Kumbh Mela on Tuesday in Prayagraj and followed it by a holy dip in River Ganga along with several state ministers at the Sangam.
