Prime Minister Narendra Modi said by voting his party back to power in Gujarat and the victory in Himachal Pradesh, shows the people have chosen “the path of development”.

He said the results have proved the country is ready for reforms and the Middle Class is asserting itself and “wants its aspirations fulfilled very soon”.

Modi said the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) serial victories from municipal bodies to state assemblies are a stamp of approval of his “reformative” policies including the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

“During the municipal body polls in Uttar Pradesh, it was being said that the GST would finish the BJP. Same canards were being spread before the Gujarat elections too. But from the (recently held) municipal bodies elections to the assembly elections, the public has given us unprecedented mandates,” Modi said.

“These election results have proved that the country is ready for reforms, is looking positively at a government that can perform and is showing its belief in transformation,” Modi said.

He said there was a time when the common people did not have too many aspirations, and would be content with the way the system was going on. But now the time has changed and “people, especially the Middle Class, are asserting themselves like never before. They have aspirations and want them fulfilled sooner than later.”

He said only the path of development would lead to the welfare of the people.
