Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) Kerala state president and NDA candidate against Congress leader Rahul in Wayanad, Thushar Vellapally has been arrested in the UAE in connection with a cheque bouncing case.
The NDA Kerala convenor had issued a cheque of 10 million dirhams (approximately Rs 19.5 crore) ten years ago to a construction firm that had bounced.
Thushar, son of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam General Secretary Vellapally Natesan, is currently lodged in Ajman Central Jail.
According to reports, the bounced cheque was given to the partner company when Thushar’s debt-ridden-business in Ajman was dissolved.
He was arrested by the police from a hotel in UAE’s Ajman, where he had gone for a meeting concerning the matter.
His father, Vellapally Natesan said his son was “trapped” and arrested.
“We are expecting that he will get bail today,” he said.
BDJS is the second biggest ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA in Kerala. Thushar Vellapally lost his deposit when he managed to get a mere 78,816, votes in the election which Gandhi won with the highest-ever margin in Kerala of over 4.30 lakh votes.
