Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, on Friday, ordered replacement of the centuries-old Directorate of Public Instructions with the Directorate of School Education calling it “irrelevant”.
He said the ‘education department’ was named ‘Directorate of Public Instructions’ during British rule, and till date, nobody even thought of changing. But now this name no longer has any relevance as per its work and responsibilities.

In most of the states, the name of the school department has been changed from Directorate of Public Instructions to Directorate of School Education, he added.
According to him, the department of school education is meant to educate children while the name given by the Britishers denotes that the department only gives instructions.
The minister said the chief secretary and principal secretary of school education were asked to initiate the process of renaming of the department, and the procedure has been formally started.
“In future, this department will be known as Directorate of School Education”, he said.
