The body of the 55-year-old technician, stuck in a 70 feet deep trench at Delhi-Katra Expressway construction site on Kartarpur-Kapurthala road for nearly 40 hours since Saturday in Punjab’s Jalandhar district, was retrieved on Monday.
Along with another worker Pawan, the technician Suresh Kumar had entered 60 to 70 feet trench dug to erect a pillar as part of the ongoing construction for Delhi-Katra Expressway.
Their task was to free a boring machine in the trench which got stuck underneath. But after the earth caved in on Saturday night, Pawan managed to come out but Suresh got trapped under the soil.

Soil excavation machines have been pressed into service. A medical team and an ambulance were also deployed but Suresh could not be saved.
Sources said Suresh’s body had reportedly begun to decompose and he had died long before the NDRF rescue team reached him. As per administration officials, the body was found at a depth of 70 feet.
