After the arrest of her husband and former BSP MLA Yogesh Verma, troubles seem to be mounting for Meerut Mayor Sunita Verma too. A probe has been started by the police to investigate her role in the April 2 violence during the Bharat Bandh call of Dalit organisations.
Police sources say they have received some complaints that both husband and wife incited people for violence.
In a statement, ADG Prashant Kumar said that about 50 villagers of the Shobhapur area, that was hit by violence, approached the police complaining that Mayor Sunita Verma was involved in provoking people for violence . “The villagers said that they had distributed lathis and liquor to the villagers,” said the ADG. “A probe has been ordered and accordingly action would be taken on the basis of probe’s outcome,” he said.
Reacting sharply, Mayor Sunita Verma said that she and her husband are being implicated falsely. “If they get any clues, clips against me than they should surely take action,” she said, adding that her husband actually was trying to pacify the mobs. She also produced a video clip to prove her claims.
Attacking the police, the Mayor said that people were arrested on the basis of their castes. “Dalits were arrested and others were allowed to go during the violence, which was unjustified,” she said. “Those responsible for the violence should be arrested irrespective of the fact that they are from BJP or BSP.”
Sunita Verma had to wait for over two hours on Sunday outside the district jail when she had gone to meet her husband Yogesh Verma.
Meanwhile, police have also reopened the history sheet of Yogesh Verma which he had managed to close in the past. The police are contemplating to book him under the NSA.
