The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday said President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the controversial Uniform Civil Code Act.

The Act was passed by the state assembly under Article 44 of the Constitution on February 6.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the law will be soon implemented in the state.

“It is a moment of great joy and pride for the people of Uttarakhand that President Droupadi Murmu has given her nod to the UCC Bill passed by the state assembly. UCC will homogenize citizens’ rights and opportunities in the state. Besides this will help curbing oppression of women. The UCC law will be crucial in promoting harmony and social equality across communities in the state,” he said.

Shailesh Bagoli, secretary to the chief minister, said the state government has constituted a committee to make a rule manual for the implementation of the Act.

Dhami had promised UCC for the people of Uttarakhand as an electoral plank on the eve of the 2022 assembly polls. Post elections, on his return to power, he constituted an experts panel to draft the Bill.
