Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day Assam visit, on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth Rs over Rs 11,000 crore in Guwahati.

During the inauguration event, Modi said that the projects will strengthen the connectivity of Assam and the Northeast with other countries of South Asia.

“The inauguration of projects worth Rs 11,000 crore, will strengthen the connectivity of Assam, northeast with other countries of South Asia. These projects will increase employment opportunities in the tourism sector…,” Modi said.

The PM also claimed that Assam is turning into a major centre for cancer treatment in the Northeast.

“Before the BJP government in Assam, there were only 6 medical colleges, whereas today there are 12 medical colleges. Assam is today becoming a major centre for cancer treatment in the Northeast…,” he added.

The prime minister also mentioned temples and places of worship in his speech and called them indelible signs of India’s civilization’s journey.

“Our pilgrimages, our temples, our places of faith, these are not just places to visit. These are indelible signs of our civilization’s journey of thousands of years. This is a testimony to how India stood firm in the face of every crisis…,” Modi said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Sunday was a golden day for Assam and hailed the development works that took place in the state under PM Modi’s leadership.

“Today marks a golden day for Assam. Under PM Modi, Assam has witnessed unprecedented peace and prosperity. Thousand of youths, who were driven to militancy and extremism, have surrendered their arms and returned to the mainstream. We got nine bridges made over the Brahmaputra River. It could only happen under the leadership and the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” CM Sarma said.

Earlier on Saturday, the prime minister was recieved at the Guwahati airport by Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
