Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) Integrated Refinery Expansion Complex in Kochi, Kerala.

The PM said that BPCL’s Kochi refinery has played a critical role in popularising the clean fuel of LPG among masses in Kerala and neighbouring States over the last more than 50 years of its existence.

On the occasion, the PM told the gathering that the Indian government’s PAHAL Scheme has entered into Guinness book of World records for being the largest Direct Benefit Transfer scheme in the world.

“More than 23 crore LPG consumers have joined the PAHAL Scheme. PAHAL has helped in identifying ‘ghost’ accounts, multiple accounts and inactive accounts,” the PM said.

The PM said that his government has taken decisive steps towards reducing import of crude oil by 10 per cent and saving the precious foreign exchange.

“India has second largest oil refinery in Asia and is emerging as a refinery hub with refining more than its demand,” the PM said.

Underlining the benefits of the government’s Ujjawla scheme, the PM said that nearly 6 crore LPG connections have been provided since May 2016 to the poorest of poor under the scheme.

“Over 1 crore customers have given up LPG subsidies under ‘Give it Up’ initiative,” he said.

On the occasion, the PM said that his government is promoting the use of environment friendly transport fuel, CNG, by expanding coverage of City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in country.

“After successful completion of 10th CGD Bidding Round, over 400 districts of country will be connected for providing piped gas supply,” he said.

The Rs 16,504 crore expansion complex is the single largest investment in Kerala and is a ‘Make in India’ initiative aimed at reducing dependence on imports.

The PM also laid the foundation stones of a series of schemes including the Mounded Storage Vessel of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
