Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena at the Hyderabad House in Delhi and a held a bilateral meeting wherein, the president congratulated PM Modi to be elected for a second term and reiterated his desire to work together to strengthen relations between the two countries for peace, prosperity and security in the region.

The Sri Lankan President had attended PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony on Thursday.

In the meet, the leaders noted that terrorism and extremism continue to pose threat to humanity and committed to closer bilateral cooperation for peace and security in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

According to reports, PM Modi is likely to make a short visit to Colombo on his way to or back from the Maldives in early June, during his first visit overseas in his second term.

Welcoming PM Modi’s visit, Sirisena said the trip is very important to Sri Lanka adding that it would be a great honour for the people of the nation.

The visit is reportedly being made to express India’s solidarity with Sri Lanka in the wake of serial bomb blasts that killed over 250 people on April 21.

Meanwhile, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth at Hyderabad House.

In their bilateral meeting, the Mauritius PM extended his warm felicitations to Modi. PM Modi thanked him and reiterated his commitment to further strengthening the fraternal and enduring bilateral ties between the two countries in all spheres.

Both the leaders also agreed to work together to achieve the shared vision of security and growth of the two countries and the Indian Ocean region.

Modi also met his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli and Bhutan PM Lotay Tshering. He also held a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid.
