Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday remembered the supreme sacrifice of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on the 87th anniversary of their martyrdom.
Calling their martyrdom a “watershed moment” in India’s history, the PM acknowledged that they gave up their lives to ensure that the people of the country are able to live a life of “freedom and dignity”.
“The martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev was a watershed moment in our history. Every Indian is proud that these three great men belong to our land. At the peak of their youth they sacrificed their lives so that others can live a life of freedom and dignity,” the PM wrote on Twitter.
The tweet was accompanied by a portion of one of the PM’s speeches hailing the martyrdom of our freedom fighters. In the video he is heard exhorting the youth to carry forward the legacy of the three martyrs and every other freedom fighter who sacrificed their life for the nation.
“How will we celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s freedom in 2022? We did not get a chance to be a part of India’s freedom struggle but as Indians we must pledge to make the nation a leader in the world and only that would be the true tribute to these great men,” he says.
Tributes for the three freedom fighters poured in from all over India. Union Ministers and leaders from Punjab were among those who remembered the sacrifice of three of India’s greatest sons.
Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged by the British on 23 March 1931 at Lahore Jail following their conviction in the Lahore conspiracy case. At the time of their deaths, Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar were 23 years of age, and Shivaram Hari Rajguru was 22.
