In his post, the Prime Minister said,” “Statehood Day wishes to the people of Mizoram. India is very proud of Mizoram’s unique cultural tapestry, its rich beauty and the warm-hearted spirit of its people. The Mizo culture is very inspiring, embodying a blend of tradition and harmony. Praying for the continuous progress, peace and prosperity of Mizoram.”

The Northern States Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have celebrated their Foundation Day on February 20 since 1987.

Arunachal Pradesh, a land of natural wonders and cultural heritage, became a full-fledged state on February 20, 1987. Until 1972, it was known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). It gained Union Territory status on January 20, 1972 and was renamed Arunachal Pradesh. It is known for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and unique tribal cultures.

Like several other northeastern states, Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out as a Union Territory. In 1986, Parliament adopted the 53rd amendment of the Constitution, which allowed for the creation of the State of Mizoram on 20 February 1987, as India’s 23rd state.

Settled in the remote northeast of India, Mizoram remains as the region’s southernmost landlocked state.
The name of the state is derived from ‘Mizo’, the endonym of the native inhabitants, and ‘Ram’, which in the Mizo language means land. Thus ‘Mizo-ram’ means land of the Mizos.
