Former Uttar Pradesh assembly speaker and former West Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi passed away at his residence after a prolonged illness here early Sunday morning. He was 88.
According to family members, the senior BJP leader died around 0500 hrs.
Tripathi was admitted to the hospital recently for different health issues. He had been infected with COVID twice and was treated at the SGPGIMS in Lucknow in the past.

The cremation of the BJP leader will be performed at the Rasulabad crematorium this afternoon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condoled the death of senior BJP leader and former West Bengal governor Kesari Nath Tripathi.

In his message, the UP chief minister said that Keshari Nath Tripathi was a senior and experienced politician. He was deeply knowledgeable about parliamentary rules, traditions, and the law. Mr. Tripathi was also a learned advocate and sensitive writer. His death has caused an irreparable loss to society.
Praying to God for the peace of the departed soul, the Chief Minister has expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.
UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, while expressing his condolences, said that Keshari Nath Tripathi was a skilled and experienced politician with a penchant for parliamentary matters.
His demise has caused irreparable loss to the state. He did social service for a long time. UP Legislative Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kesari Nath Tripathi.
Mahana claimed to be well-versed in parliamentary traditions, rules, and issues. His demise has caused irreparable losses in the social and political spheres.
He has prayed to God to grant eternal peace to the pious soul and strength to the bereaved family members.
Keshari Nath Tripathi, born on November 10, 1934, in Allahabad, was a member of the UP legislative assembly six times. He served as a cabinet minister during the Janata Party regime from 1977 to 1979. He was also the president of the BJP in the state.
He was governor of West Bengal from July 2014 to July 2019.
Tripathi practiced as a senior advocate at the Allahabad High Court. He was also a renowned author and poet.
