Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said the government would follow the same investigation procedures in the Paradise Papers leaks as it did in probing the people named in Panama Papers.
“The investigation is going on and notices have been sent to the people whose names figured in the Panama Papers. There are some people whose accounts are illegal. Action is being taken against people. Some people have said that this is our legal transaction and we have done it with the permission of the RBI. Some people say that this money belongs to NRIs. So on the basis of merit we will consider these defences,” he said.
“The process which we had followed at the time of Panama will be followed in Paradise. All the cases will be considered on the basis of individual merit,” Jaitley said at a press conference.
On Monday the Central Board of Direct Taxes announced formation of a multi-agency group for carrying out investigations into the Paradise Papers leaks which included public names of prominent politicians, actors among others.
