Odisha youth in hospital, Congress latches on to his odyssey

Rourkela youth Muktikant Biswal had walked 1,350 km and reached UP when he fell sick

The Congress latched on to the unprecedented walk of over 1,350 km by a youth of Rourkela, Muktikant Biswal, to meet the PM and remind him of his unfulfilled promises of a superspeciality hospital in Rourkela and a second bridge over Brahmani river in the area.

In a tweet, AICC president Rahul Gandhi noted Biswal’s efforts to draw attention of the PM. In Odisha too, state Congress president Niranjan Patnaik criticised the Modi government saying the demands put forward by Biswal were one of the innumerable tall promises made for votes.

Biswal, a 30-year-old from Rourkela, had walked 1,350 km on his way to Delhi when he was admitted to a hospital in Uttar Pradesh after he fell sick.

There has been no progress on the two major promises made to the people of Rourkela — the bridge and the hospital.

In fact, the BJP MLA of Rourkela and former Union minister Dilip Ray had met PM Modi, Union minister Nitin Gadkari and several other ministers repeatedly over the last three years pleading with them to fulfil the promise.

Anguished over the lack of response, Ray had even boycotted a visit by central ministers to Rourkela.

On Sunday, when Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was questioned about it, he claimed work on the bridge had started and Union Steel Minister Birender Singh had laid foundation for the hospital only a few days ago. He blamed the state government for the delay in according forest clearance.

Reports from the ground, however, say there has been no activity on any of the two projects. Even though Pradhan claimed work on the bridge had started, sources in the National Highway Authority of India said the structural design for the project was yet to be approved.
