Referring to the HMPV virus, Nadda in a video said health experts have clarified that HMPV virus is not a new virus as it was first identified in 2001 and it has been circulating in the entire world since many years.

Informing that the HMPV spreads through the air by way of respiration, he said, “This can affect persons of all age groups. The virus spreads more during the winter and the early spring months.”

“On recent reports of the cases in HMPV in China, the Health Ministry , the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are keeping a close watch on the situation in China as well as in the neighbouring countries,” the Health Minister said.
Nadda said the World Health Organization (WHO) has taken cognizance of the situation and will share its report shortly with the Ministry.
He stated that the country data for respiratory viruses are available with the ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) has also been reviewed and there is no surge in any of the common respiratory viral pathogens is observed in India.
The Health Minister also informed that a Joint Monitoring Group meeting was held under the chairmanship of Director General for Health Services (DGHS) on 4th January to review the situation.
“The health systems and surveillance networks of the country remain vigilant, ensuring the country is ready to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges. There is no reason to worry. We are closely monitoring the situation,” added Nadda.
Earlier this morning, the Health Ministry informed that two cases of HMPV were reported from Karnataka. Both the cases detected were infants and they don’t have any history of international travel.
