As the counting in the Nagaland Assembly election is underway, the trends show that BJP is leading on 30 seats, with Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) leading on 26 seats, Chief Minister TR Zeliang said on Saturday that the ruling NPF is ready to form a new government in the state with the BJP if it comes forward for a post-poll alliance.
However, Zeliang virtually ruled out any alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) that fought the state assembly election with the BJP.
Zeliang said his party has been a BJP ally since 2003. “We are continuing with the alliance. We never parted at any point of time. And we hope that they (BJP) will come forward and join our government.”
On the other hand, Union minister and BJP in-charge for the state Kiren Rijiju said that the BJP will form the next government in Nagaland with the help of other parties indicating that the party’s erstwhile ally NPF may align with it.
Rijiju, who extensively campaigned for the BJP and its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland, said the Congress was nowhere to be seen as the party has not won a single state in the 60-member Assembly.
“The BJP will form the government in Nagaland with the help of other parties,” he told PTI.
Asked whether the BJP and NDPP will be in a position to form the next government without the help of party’s erstwhile ally Naga Peoples Front (NPF), Rijiju said, “The NPF has already passed a resolution on alliance with the BJP”.
The BJP has won eight seats in Nagaland and was set to grab three others, while the NDPP won six and was set to win 11 more.
