Ending 55-yr old relationship with Congress, Milind Deora resigns

He is likely to join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde this afternoon, said sources.

Ending 55-yr old relationship with Congress, Milind Deora resigns

In a major setback for the Congress in Maharashtra, party leader Milind Deora on Sunday resigned from the party.

Deora, however, did not disclose the reason for quitting the party.

In a post on X, the Congress leader wrote, “Today marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in my political journey. I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of INC, ending my family’s 55-year relationship with the party.”

He also expressed his gratitude to all leaders, colleagues and workers for their unwavering support over the years.

Later, in response to a question by the reporters, Deora said he was walking on the path of development.

Reacting to Deora’s resignation, Congress general secretary in-charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh in a post on X wrote, “I recall my long years of association with Murli Deora with great fondness. He had close friends in all political parties, but was a stalwart Congressman who always stood by the Congress party — through thick and thin.”

Notably, the resignation came days after a meeting was convened by the Congress’ National Alliance Committee (NAC) with Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) over seat sharing for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
In the meeting, all together decided to contest the general elections.

Deora was unhappy over the Uddhav Thackeray faction winning the Mumbai South seat. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) is a part of the opposition alliance.

Deora, son of Congress veteran Murli Deora, had won the Mumbai South seat in 2004 and 2009. He ended up as the first runner-up in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
