The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday, 11 April, said that the ‘laser’ on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, which his party claimed could be from a sniper’s gun, was actually from a mobile phone of an AICC photographer.
The Congress had earlier shot off a missive to the MHA alleging a breach in their president’s security in Amethi on Wednesday soon after he filed his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections.
The MHA said that it had not received any such letter from the grand old party but was drawn to media reports on the “incident”.
“As soon as MHA’s attention was drawn to reports that there was an incident of ‘green light’ being pointed at him yesterday in Amethi, the Director (SPG) was asked to verify the factual position,” a statement issued by the MHA said.
“Director (SPG) has informed MHA that they have gone through the Video Clipping of the incident very closely. The ‘green light’ shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by AICC photographer, who was videographing the press interaction,” the MHA added.
Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala had written a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh drawing his attention to a video of Gandhi when he was addressing the media.
They claimed that a green laser – shaped like a dot – dancing near the right side of Gandhi’s temple could be from a sniper gun.
“A perusal of the video by various persons including former security personnel leads to a prima facie conclusion that this laser could emanate from a potential weapon such as a sniper gun,” the leaders said, adding, “Even a possibility like this is a cause of serious alarm and concern pointing towards a breach in the security of Gandhi.”
