The Kavarathi Sessions Court on Wednesday sentenced Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizalmand  and three others  to 10-year rigorous imprisonment  in a 2009 attempt to murder case.Sayed Mohammed Noorul Ameen, 43, Mohammed Husaain, 54, and Mohammed Basheer Thangal, 52, are the three others who have been  sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment.

Mohammad Faizal,40, the Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) lawmaker, is representing Lakhadweep in the Lok Sabha  since 2014. The court suspended the bail of Faizal and three others following their conviction . While 37 persons were arraigned as accused, all except the four were acquitted.

The prosecution case is that Faizal and  a group of people attacked  Mohammad Salih, son-in-law of former Union Minister P M Sayeed. Salih, who was seriously injured in the attack,was flown to Kerala, where he had undergone treatment in a hospital for months.

Faizal, who is at present remanded in Kannur Central Jail,is expected to move the Kerala High Court, which has jurisdiction over Lakshadweep, against the conviction and get it stayed to prevent his disqualification as a lawmaker.
