Sonam Wangchuk, the education reformist and engineer who is the real-life “Phunsukh Wangdu” of the Bollywood flick ”3 Idiots” is on fast unto death in support of his demands for Ladakh

As Wangchuk’s fast entered its sixth day on Monday he urged the people living in big cities to lead a simpler life to reduce carbon emissions and termed his 21-day fast, extendable to death, “CLIMATEFAST.’

Taking to social media on Sunday, he informed that a large number of people from different religions gathered at the venue of his fast in Leh and sat on a day-long fast in support of his cause.

He urged the people to support the movement by organising a one-day fast in other cities on coming Sunday, March 17.

The environment activist, who bats for an eco-friendly lifestyle, is a key campaigner for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, and began his fast unto death on March 6, after the rounds of talks with the Centre over Ladakh’s demands were inconclusive.

Wangchuck has been reaching out to people through social media platforms as he updates the status of his climate fast daily since March 6.

In the videos uploaded by him on Instagram and other social media platforms, the engineer is seen out in the open in extreme cold with temperatures as low as -17 degrees Celsius.

The protest also comes in the wake of certain things yet to be fulfilled by the government, which were part of their poll manifesto in 2019, claims Wangchuck.

He has been demanding statehood for Ladakh, advocating the rights of the natives in the region, and creating awareness about climate issues the region is facing.

The innovator and educationist was earlier praised for developing solar-heated tents for the use of the Indian army in extremely cold places, while he also has many other eco-friendly innovations to his name.

He had made these solar tents in 2021.
