Doctors across major cities in India, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, have announced to go on an indefinite strike following the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
The doctors said they will stop discharging their duties until a thorough probe into the incident is completed. In addition to demanding justice for the slain doctor, they are calling for enhanced security measures for all medical staff.
The horrific incident occurred late Thursday night when the body of the 32-year-old doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital.
The initial autopsy report revealed the disturbing nature of the crime, indicating that the victim had sustained multiple injuries and was bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts.
Her body also bore signs of physical trauma, including injuries to her neck, left leg, right hand, and lips.
Acting swiftly, the Kolkata Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and one suspect, identified as Sanjoy Roy, has been arrested.
Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital but was not officially associated with it, was apprehended after police found evidence linking him to the crime.
According to the police, Roy returned home after the crime and attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes.
RG Kar Medical College principal resigns
Meanwhile, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, resigned from his position, citing the intense backlash and accusations of victim-blaming that have been circulating on social media.
Dr. Ghosh, who has faced severe criticism and allegations of making insensitive remarks about the victim, denied the accusations and expressed his deep sorrow over the incident.
“I cannot take the humiliation,” Dr. Ghosh told reporters. “Political statements are being made in my name. The girl who died was like my daughter. I am also a parent. As a parent, I am resigning.”
He added, “Students are being provoked to ensure my removal. I want the accused to be punished. I am being defamed. I have not made such remarks.”
