Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Thursday sacked the vice chancellors of the University of Calicut and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, citing that their appointments were not according to the UGC rules.

Khan, in his capacity as the Chancellor of the universities in the state, has sacked M.K Jayaraj, Vice Chancellors of Calicut University and Dr M.V Narayanan, Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit,citing that their appointments were not according to the UGC rules

Earlier, the Kerala High Court granted Raj Bhavan a six-week period to decide on the removal of the VCs after conducting a hearing .

The governor sought UGC’s opinion regarding the appointment of Open and Digital varsity Vice Chancellors . Though Dr P M Mubarak Pasha, the vice-chancellor of the Sree Narayanaguru Open University, submitted his resignation ahead of the hearing, Khan has not accepted it.

Dr M S Rajasree, the Vice-Chancellor of the A P J Abdul Kalam Technological University, was removed from her post by the Supreme Court in 2022 , as her appointment was made in violation of UGC norms.
