The violence led to the death of a young boy. Shops and vehicles were torched during clashes which broke out after a mob resorted to stone pelting on a motorcycle rally.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik called the communal clashes a “blot” on the state.

At least 112 people have been arrested as prohibitory orders continue to remain in place.

Director General of Police OP Singh has said that the National Security Act will be slapped on those behind the violence.

A Peace Committee has been formed by the district administration. It has been doing the rounds of the tension-hit areas and requested people not to pay heed to rumours.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex gratia relief of Rs 20 lakh for the kin of the deceased.

The state government called the violence as a “political conspiracy”. The main opposition, Samajwadi Party (SP), has termed the violence “ominous and unfortunate” and has appealed for calm.

The family of the deceased has demanded that the boy be given the status of a martyr, that the Chief Minister should come to console the family and that the guilty be brought to justice at the earliest.

The father of the youth also threatened self-immolation if his son was not declared a martyr.
