The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is inching towards the majority mark in the crucial Karnataka Assembly elections, has declared that it has already crossed the half-way mark in the vote count.

The Election Commission data almost agrees, as it shows BJP is leading in 103 and requires 10 more seats to form the government on its own. The Congress, so far, is leading in only 54 seats, while JD(S) is leading in 37 seats.

BJP chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa is leading in Shikaripura.

Earlier, it was expected that the people of the southern state will deliver a fractured verdict. But if the current trend continues, BJP will cruise to the majority mark.

However, though the BJP is confident of winning, the possibility of a hung assembly can’t be completely denied at this stage.

In case the verdict goes to a hung assembly, Deve Gowda-led JD(S) will have a crucial role to play.

Given that the BJP has maintained that it won’t need an alliance with JD(S) to form the government, it would be interesting to see what the saffron party will do if it falls short of some seats to get to the half-way mark.
