As the Karnataka assembly elections 2018 draws near, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of the ruling Congress party cited six “broken promises” by the Centre for which his party is contesting the ‘prestige’ battle against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the southern state.
The 69-year-old Siddaramaiah, the first Karnataka CM to have completed five years in office in 40 years, took to Twitter on 29 April to accuse the BJP government in the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing to fulfil the promises it made to the people.
“This Election is also about broken promised of the @narendramodi Govt,” wrote Siddaramaiah.
“1. Black money didn’t become white. 2. People didn’t get Rs 15 lakh in their accounts. 3. People’s money lost value due to demonetisation. They were made to stand in line to get their own money. 4. Unemployed are asked to sell Pakodas. 5. International crude oil prices have fallen drastically but petrol/diesel prices keep increasing. 6. Corruption free Govt was promised, but Banks are being looted,” he wrote highlighting everything from demonetisation to the bank frauds that rocked the nation in the last couple of years.
“We are fighting election on these issues,” he wrote adding the hashtag #CongressMathomme, which translates to “Congress again”.
He also posted two more tweets. In one of the tweets, Siddaramaiah said that Congress’ mission is to defeat both the parties contesting the Karnataka elections. He called the BJP “communal and anti-development” and branded Janata Dal (Secular), the third party in the fray, “opportunist”.
Siddaramaiah also claimed that both the BJP and the JD(S) are working together.
“This #KarnatakaElection2018 the mission is to defeat anti-Development & communal BJP & opportunist JDS, who are working together. This election is also about protecting our Constitution from BJP whose declared intention it is to change the Constitution,” he wrote.
The Karnataka CM, who is contesting from Chamundeshwari and Badami, also claimed that his government has made Karnataka “number 1” in many sectors.
“We are also fighting this Election for your mandate to continue our good work in the last 5 years. We have made Karnataka No1 in many sectors. We will now make Karnataka No1 in all major sectors,” he wrote, adding, “We will specially focus on sustainable Jobs & infrastructure.”
Siddaramaiah is the first Chief Minister of Karnataka to have completed five years in office in the last 40 years. D Devaraj Urs, the longest serving CM of the state, had completed a five-year term only once – from 1972 to 1977.
