The Kashmir valley on Tuesday observed a shutdown against the government’s ban on Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and arrest of its activists.

However, there was no response to the shutdown call in Jammu and Ladakh regions where shops and business establishments remained open.

Various political and trade organisations of Kashmir had called for the shutdown also against the government granting reservation in promotion to employees of the SC and ST categories. They were also against the decision of the government to bring residents of villages near the International Border in Jammu division at par with those of the LoC and LAC by granting 3% reservation in jobs to them.

The Kashmir-centric political parties and trade bodies were describing this as tampering with the Article 35A.

The Kashmir Economic Alliance alleged that attempts were being made by the Governor and New Delhi to erode the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by “tinkering” with Article 370 & 35A.
