An investor in Karuvannur Cooperative Bank in Kerala’s Thrissur district has approached Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the High Court Chief Justice with a request to allow euthanasia as he was unable to afford treatment and living expenses.

Joshi, 53, a native of Mapranam in Thrissur district, approached Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Kerala High Court Chief Justice, seeking permission for mercy killing, as his savings amounting to Rs 70 lakh deposited in the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank could not be withdrawn for his treatment and living expenses.

He said as he is a cancer patient, who had undergone 21 surgeries, he could not do any work to raise money for his treatment and meet his basic needs.

In his petition, Joshi requested the Chief Minister and the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court to urgently intervene in the issue, either to resolve it or give permission to end his life on January 30.

Pointing to his deteriorating health condition, Joshi mentioned that he had undergone 21 surgeries in the last 20 years. The petition also highlighted the family’s financial crisis, affecting basic expenses, children’s education, and his treatment.

“There is no clarity on whether I will get back the huge amount in the bank. So I decided to seek approval for mercy killing,” Joshi says in his petition.

Joshi has also alleged that some local CPI-M leaders threatened him, which forced him to send the plea to the CM and the Chief Justice.

The Karuvannur Cooperative Bank had purportedly given “benami loans” worth hundreds of crores and now duped investors are running from pillar to post after the Enforcement Directorate launched a probe into the scam in the CPI-M-controlled bank in Thrissur district.
