"Warm greetings and best wishes to women in India and in all parts of the world on the occasion of International Women’s Day," President Pranab Mukherjee said in a series of tweets.
"On this day, I call upon people of India to reaffirm their commitment to gender equality and true empowerment of women," he said.
"Generations of Indian women have made an invaluable contribution to the development and progress of our country," Mukhejee added.
Celebrated every year on March 8, International Women’s Day was earlier known as the International Working Women’s Day. This day is celebrated as a salute to all the women from every economic and political background for their love, patience and hard work.
It was celebrated for the very first time in 1909 as a social event in the city of New York.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030’ as given by the United Nations. This theme in itself, empowers women through every sphere of their lives.
