23-year-old Navy sailor today died of a gunshot injury from his weapon on board a ship under the Southern Naval Command, and an inquiry is on into the incident, a defence spokesman said.
The sailor, Raxit Kumar Parmar, a native of Kheda district of Gujarat, was on sentry duty on board INS Jamuna when the incident occurred at about 7.30 am.
He sustained serious injuries due to a gunshot fired from the weapon he was carrying, the spokesman said.

The injured sailor was immediately rushed to the naval hospital INHS Sanjivani, where he breathed his last at 9.40 am.
A case of unnatural death has been registered with the police and a board of inquiry (BoI) has been instituted to determine the circumstances which led to his death, the spokesman said.
The sailor is survived by his parents and a brother who have been informed of his demise.
