A day after Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav shocked the entire Opposition by saying that he wants to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi win a second term, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Rabri Devi on Wednesday said that his remarks hold no weight.
Asked to comment on the words of appreciation that Yadav showered on PM Modi in Lok Sabha, the former Bihar Chief Minister said, “Unki umar ho gayi hai. Yaad nahi rehta hai kab kya bol denge. Unki boli ka koi mayene nahi rakhta hai (He is grown old now. He cannot remember what to say and when to say it. His remarks hold no relevance).”
Speaking on the last day of the session in Parliament before the country heads to polls, the 79-year-old Yadav took everyone by surprise when he said, “Meri kaamna hai ki pradhaanmantri ji aap phirse pradhaanmantri banein. Mera anubhav hai ki main jab bhi aap se mila, aapne turant mera kaam kiya (I wish that PM Modi, you should become the Prime Minister again. I have experienced that whenever I met you, you got my work done instantly).”
“PM ko badhaai dena chahta hun ki PM ne sabko saath lekar chalne ki koshish ki hai. Main kehna chahta hun ki saare sadaysa phir se jeet kar aayen, aur aap (PM) dobara pradhan mantri banein (I want to congratulate the PM that he tries to take everyone along. I want to say that all the members [of the ruling party] win again and you [PM] return to power),” Yadav added eliciting thumping of desks from the treasury bench.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who was seated next to Mulayam, was seen smiling when the three-time former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was heaping praises on PM Modi.
The opposition responded quickly by dismissing Yadav’s comments.
“I don’t have knowledge about the context in which Neta-Ji said it. But we want change of government at Centre. PM himself will lose from his constituency,” SP leader Ravidas Mehrotra was quoted as saying by ANI.
When asked to comment on Mulayam’s remark, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said, “I diagree with him. But Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji has a role in politics and I respect his opinion.”
On Wednesday, Mulayam’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav said that the SP founder merely gave his blessings to everyone.
“There must be a reason behind his statement, though he wished everyone, be it opposition or Govt. Elders always give ‘aashirwaad’ (blessings), but aashirwad doesn’t mean elections are won; for that hard work is needed. His good wishes are with everyone,” she was quoted as saying by ANI.
Reacting to Yadav’s words of appreciation, a smiling PM Modi was seen folding his hands in gratitude. He later made a special mention of Yadav’s words of praise.
The RJD is one of the key players in the so-called mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) of some opposition parties to take on the BJP in the upcoming polls. In January, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav backed the alliance formed by SP and BSP in Uttar Pradesh.

The SP is led by Mulayam’s son Akhilesh Yadav. The two are not on good terms since a family feud within the party that broke out before the 2017 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, which brought BJP to power in the state after 15 years.
