Congress president Rahul Gandhi announced on Wednesday the farmers’ loan would be waived within 10 days if his party came to power in Madhya Pradesh after the Assembly elections later this year.

Addressing a rally at Pipliya Mandi in Mandsaur district to commemorate the first anniversary of police firing on farmers during an agitation in which six farmers were killed, Rahul Gandhi said, “Here Kamal Nath (MP Congress President) and Jyotiraditya Scindia (the State poll campaign committee chairman) are sitting. I want to assure you that within 10-days of coming to power in Madhya Pradesh, the government will waive (farmers’) loan.”

The Congress president also promised that a government of his party in the state would take action against those responsible for the police firing on farmers on this day last year.

The Congress chief, who met the families of the farmers killed last year, said, “Even after one year, there hasn’t been an inquiry into the Mandsaur police firing. The families of the farmers who were killed are still waiting for justice.”

“Our first job is to protect the farmers of India. Almost 1200 farmers have killed themselves in a year. Modi calls Mehul Choksi, “Mehul Bhai”, these people were given 30 crore each by Narendra Modi. If Madhya Pradesh had that money, farmers wouldn’t have committed suicide,” he added.

Launching an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Gandhi scion said, “Narendra Modi not only lied to the people but to the whole nation in the promise of giving jobs.”

“We won’t make fake promises to you, whatever we say, we will do that and we will deliver each and every promise. For this you’ve to help us and we will waive off your loans,” he added.

Assembly polls are due in Madhya Pradesh in November this year along with Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
