Expressing deep concern over the rising case of farmers committing suicide across the nation, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to file a detailed reply and the road map within 4 weeks stating proposed line of action on the issue.

A top court bench headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar termed the farmers suicide case an important and serious issue.

During the hearing, the court said that many farmers were committing suicide because of crop failure and indebtedness and yet there was no national policy to protect them.

Reports suggested that over 1,483 farmers have committed suicide in Gujarat in the past 3 years because they were heavily in debt.
