Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, on Monday, cautioned the elders that they should not make baseless remarks as it amount to a breach of privilege of the House.
His suggestion came during the Zero Hour when AAP MP, Sanjay Singh, alleged that the government was misusing investigative agencies to target opposition leaders.
He also said that in the last eight years, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted 3,000 raids on opposition leaders but only 23 people could be convicted.
Following this, some members of the ruling party objected to the remarks, prompting Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to intervene. Chairman Dhankhar said that anything spoken in the House should be on the basis of accuracy and correctness.
He said that in this House nobody is allowed to give any fact not duly attested and a very serious breach of privilege. Further, Dhankhar, said that the newspaper report or the opinion given by anyone, has absolutely no importance. He said that legally admissible documents should be the basis for making allegations in the House.
Congress President and Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, then said that members use the information given in answers to questions in Parliament, media reports and statements made by the Prime Minister outside the House.
When the Chairman asked Union Minister and Leader of the House Piyush Goyal to speak, he said that the claim made in the House that 3,000 raids have been conducted on political people is false and has no merit.
According to Goyal, there is a specific direction from the court that action should be taken against MPs and MLAs found guilty of economic or other offences. At the same time, in Zero Hour, Sanjay Singh alleged that the government is not taking action against criminals like Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, Lalit Modi and the Reddy brothers. Still, Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena MP) and Satyendar Jain (Delhi government minister) are being jailed. He also said that the agencies raided the residence of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi liquor scam.
Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, a member of the Parliamentary Committee for home affairs, has written today to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to increase the monthly assistance under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme to Rs 2,000.
