A doctor in Jammu & Kashmir did something remarkable with the help of WhatsApp. He assisted a pregnant woman to deliver a healthy baby over a WhatsApp call. The incident highlights that the messaging app can be used for even medical emergencies.
Women have a history of delivery complications like eclampsia, prolonged labour, and episiotomy, which make the situation even more urgent. The woman in question required an immediate air evacuation, but the weather condition in Keran was very bad. The place was fully covered with snow and remained cut off from the rest of the Kupwara district during the winter.

“On Friday night, we received a patient in labour at the Keran PHC (primary health centre) with a history of complicated delivery with eclampsia, prolonged labour and episiotomy,” Block Medical Officer of Kralpora Dr Mir Mohammad Shafi said.
With no other option in sight, a gynecologist in the Kralpora sub district hospital, Dr Parvaiz guided Dr Arshad Sofi and his paramedical staff at the Keran PHC by relying on technology to provide immediate care using WhatsApp.
“The patient was induced (into labour) and after six hours a healthy baby girl was born. Currently both the baby and the mother are under observation and doing fine,” Dr Shafi said.
“Fresh snowfall in Kashmir on Saturday affected air and surface traffic as the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed for vehicles due to shooting stones and flights were delayed because of poor visibility,” officials said.
