Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi leader and Mehrauli president Azad Singh on Thursday allegedly slapped his wife, an ex-South Delhi mayor, at the party’s Delhi office.

The incident happened right after a poll-preparedness meeting with senior leader Prakash Javadekar, sources said. The woman, former South Delhi mayor Sarita Chaudhary was seen hit in front of several people, and the video of the incident too went viral on social media.

The incident left the BJP embarrassed. It led Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari to remove Singh from the post of Mehrauli district president and a committee was formed to probe the incident, party general secretary Rajesh Bhatia said.
Another leader, Vikas Tanwar, was appointed as working president of the district.

A senior party leader who witnessed the incident said that the fight happened as soon as they came out of the meeting called by Mr Javadekar, who is in-charge of Delhi BJP for Assembly polls, at the party office on Pant Marg.

“The duo is involved in a marital discord for many years. It was, however, not expected that they will fight like this openly,” he said.

According to Delhi Police no complaint has been filed yet. “We have not received any complaint from anyone involved in the said incident. Appropriate action will be taken if a complaint is given to us,” an official in the Delhi Police said.
