The suspense over Delhi’s new chief minister continued on Monday with the BJP postponing its Legislature Party meeting, scheduled to be held today. According to party sources, it will now take place on February 19.

The swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister will be held at Ramlila Maidan on February 20, the sources added.

“The BJP Legislature Party meeting, scheduled for Monday, has been postponed. Now this meeting will be held on February 19. The swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister will also be held on February 20 instead of February 18,” a BJP source said.

The development comes after a meeting of the BJP core group at the party’s Delhi office on Sunday. During the meeting, preparations and arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony were discussed.

According to the sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, NDA alliance leaders, Union Ministers, business leaders, and prominent personalities from the film and sports fraternities are likely to attend the mega swearing-in ceremony.

The BJP has not yet announced its chief ministerial pick for Delhi with several names being speculated for the top job. Parvesh Verma, son of former CM Sahib Singh Verma, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal, is among the frontrunners, along with Satish Upadhyay, Vijender Gupta, and Jitendra Mahajan.

The BJP stormed back to power in Delhi after 27 years winning 48 of the 70 assembly constituencies in the recently-concluded assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party, which has been ruling the national capital for more than a decade, was reduced to just 22 seats, a significant decline from 62 in 2020.

The Congress again drew a blank even as the party’s voteshare increased marginally.
