The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday wrested the Noorpur assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Samajwadi Party candidate Naeem-ul-Hasan achieved 94,866 votes, against 89,188 obtained by his nearest rival, Avni Singh of the BJP, in the bypoll to the assembly constituency in Binore district.

After the victory, SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav addressed the media and said people had given a befitting reply to the BJP. He thanked people for the mandate and added that the people who did not believe in democracy were defeated.

“I want to congratulate all the people who voted for us. This is a victory for the poor and the farmers. The BJP has always tried to deflect attention from real issues. This is a defeat for those who do not believe in the democracy. People have given a befitting reply to the BJP,” said Akhilesh Yadav.

Congratulating party workers and alliance members, Akhilesh Yadav wrote on Twitter, “Congratulations to the people, activists, candidates and all united parties of Kairana and Noorpur! The defeat of the ruling party in Kairana is the defeat of their politics that divides the country in their own laboratory. This is the beginning of the victory of the people who believe in unity and the end of egoistic power.”

Noorpur bypolls were necessitated by the death of sitting BJP legislator Lokendra Singh in a road accident in February. The bypolls were held on Monday and had seen a 57.31 per cent turnout.

The BJP had fielded the widow of Lokendra Singh, Avni Singh from the seat.
