A head constable of the Madhya Pradesh Police was shot dead by a miscreant in a bid to flee from a police team late night Thursday in the Seoni district.
According to police officials, the deceased policeman, Rakesh Thakur, along with two other cops was in hot pursuit of four miscreants accused of several thefts and burglaries.
The accused were travelling in an SUV while a police team was giving gave them a chase.
Eventually, when the criminals were cornered near Bamhodi near Seoni town, one of them opened fire by a pistol in which Head Constable Rakesh Thakur sustained a fatal gunshot wound in his chest.
While the policemen succeeded in overpowering and arresting three accused, the one who fired at the police team managed to escape.
According to Seoni Superintendent of Police Rakesh Kumar Singh, the arrested accused persons were identified as Pradyuman Vaishnav (24) Gulshan Das Vaishnav (34) and Janak Singh Khanna (46). The miscreant who fired and escaped has been identified as Saddam.
Meanwhile, the grievously injured Rakesh Thakur was rushed to a hospital near Nagpur town in Maharashtra. However, he succumbed during treatment.
According to information, the police seized a revolver, 20 cartridges and the SUV from the accused men.
