Controversial godman Chandraswamy passes away

Self-styled godman, political broker and astrologer to the elite, Chandraswami alias Nemi Chand, died at the Apollo Hospital here at the age of after a prolonged illness. He was associated with former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Chandrashekhar. His named had also cropped up in the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi.

After dominating news headlines for almost three decades, he faded into the oblivion as he got mired in a series of cases involving financial irregularities, violations of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.

Born in 1948 at Behror in Rajasthan, Chandraswami started out as an astrologer and came into contact with politicians. So was his charisma that who’s who of Indian politics would make beeline for him in the 1980s.
