Days after Shatrughan Sinha joined the Congress, his wife, Poonam Sinha, joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday.
The 69-year-old Sinha was inducted into the party fold by Kannauj MP Dimple Yadav, who is the wife of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.
It is likely that Poonam Sinha will contest from Lucknow as the SP-BSP-RLD candidate against Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
“Poonam Sinha ji (wife of Shatrughan Sinha) will be the SP-BSP-RLD candidate from Lucknow. She will file nomination on 18 April. We appeal to the Congress that do not field your candidate from here so that BJP can be defeated,” SP leader Ravidas Mehrotra was quoted as saying by ANI.
Lucknow is a bastion of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1991. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee won from the seat five consecutive times. While BJP leader Lalji Tandon won the seat in 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Rajnath Singh was elected to Parliament from the seat in 2014.
Singh is seeking a re-election from the seat.
The SP-BSP-RLD alliance has left the Congress out of the equation in Uttar Pradesh. Thus it is interesting that while Poonam Sinha joined the SP, her husband switched from the BJP to Congress on 6 April.
The actor-turned-politician, who seeks a re-election from Patna Sahib constituency in Bihar, has been a bitter critic of the BJP ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power.
