In a setback to the Congress, Abdul Khaleque, the incumbent Member of Parliament representing the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, tendered his resignation on Friday.
Khaleque’s departure stems from his dissatisfaction with the party, particularly after being denied a ticket for the upcoming elections. Instead, the party opted to field Deep Bayan, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Sevadal.
He had expressed his discontent with the party’s neglect of the Muslim community in Assam.

In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Khaleque reminisced about his admiration for the party’s historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Maulana Azad, and his commitment to its principles.
He also criticized the state president and the AICC general secretary in-charge for their approach, which, in his view, undermined the party’s prospects in Assam.
