The Congress on Saturday appointed former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel as senior observer to coordinate the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra (BJNY) and other party activities in Bihar.

The yatra-led by former Congress president and MP Rahul Gandhi which kicked off from Manipur’s Imphal on January 14, is currently in West Bengal after it traversed through Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Assam.

“Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Bhupesh Baghel as senior observer to coordinate Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and other party activities in Bihar with immediate effect,” Congress general secretary in-charge of organisation KC Venugopal said in a communique.

The yatra will cover 6,700 km in 66 days in 15 states spread across 110 districts. It will conclude in Maharashtra.

Notably, the appointment of Baghel also comes amid the clamour that Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar may join the BJP-led NDA again by severing ties with the INDIA bloc.

In Bihar, the Congress is part of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (JDU and Rashtriya Janata Dal) government.
