Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh, who turned 75 on Saturday, got the perfect birthday gift on Friday with voters in the state paving the way for his elevation to the chief minister’s (CM) post after a gap of 10 years.

The former CM led from the front and single-handed helped the Congress in projecting itself as the alternative to the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bhartiya Janta Party (SAD-BJP) combine.
Captain’s leadership helped in lifting the spirit of the demoralised Congress workers who were losing hope following party’s decade long ouster from power in the state.
Even as the Congress high command took time to announce his candidature for the chief minister’s post, Capt Amarinder made sure the party took due care in selection of candidates which played key role in party’s shocking defeat in 2012 Assembly elections.
