At a time when qualified jobseekers are languishing in joblessness amid reports of master degree holders opting in lowly-paid engagement in private sectors, around one lakh sanctioned posts in various government departments continue to lie vacant.

If the Rural Development, Skill Development & Technical Education Minister Pritiranjan Gharai’s statement to a query by BJP MLA Mukesh Mahaling in the State Assembly is anything to go by, as many as 98,348 Government posts are lying vacant in the State.

Sharing the statistics provided by the General Administration & Public Grievance Department, the Minister told the House that a total of 98,348 posts in 41 departments are lying vacant in the state.

The Health and Family Welfare Department with 26,815 vacancies tops the list of vacancies followed by School and Mass Education Department (21811). The Department of Industries, with a solitary vacancy, remains on the bottom of the chart.

Odisha has around 9 lakh registered unemployed jobseekers registered with the government employment exchange and skill development department, said an official.

As many as 8,98,717 unemployed youths have registered themselves under the Skill Development and Technical Education department. Out of them, 1,96,000 aspirants have completed graduation, 1,72,534 have passed matriculation and 3,13051 have completed intermediate.

As many as 1,11,974 job aspirants are Arts graduates and 15,335 are post-graduates. Similarly, 72,516 trained teachers have registered for jobs after completing CT, Bachelor in Education, and Master in Education, the officer concluded.
