He said that the Congress ruled India for decades, but their only intention was to keep problems alive and trap people in them.
However, Chidambaram also took a dig at Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Modi’s vision on respect for wealth creators.
Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision on population explosion, respect for wealth creators and shun single-use plastic.
In a series of tweets, Chidambaram said that all must welcome these three announcements made by PM Modi in his speech on Independence Day.
He said the first and third exhortations must become people’s movements.

However, taking a dig at Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Modi’s vision on respect for wealth creators, Chidambaram said that he hopes that the “FM and her legion of tax officials and investigators heard the PM’s second exhortation loud and clear”.
In his sixth Independence Day speech, the Prime Minister stressed on the need for awareness on population explosion.
“Population explosion will cause many problems for our future generations,” he said.
PM Modi also praised those going for smaller families saying that they were observing a form of “patriotism”.
Prime Minister Modi further said that wealth creation is a great national service and urged the nation to not see wealth creators with suspicion.
“Wealth creation is absolutely essential. Those who create wealth are India’s wealth and we respect them,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi, in his Independence Day speech, also urged the people of the nation to refrain from using plastic bags.
Asserting that single-use plastic is not good for the environment, Modi on Thursday urged the people and shopkeepers to eliminate the use of plastic bags completely.
Modi said single-use plastic poses a grave threat to the environment.
“Can we free India from single-use plastic? The time for implementing such an idea has come. Teams must be mobilised to work in this direction. A significant step must come out by October 2,” Modi said.
