Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passed away late on Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack. She was 67 years old.

BJP leader, Swaraj was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) at 10:15 pm by her family and was taken straight to the emergency ward.

Her untimely death led to an outpour of condolences on social media. Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior leaders of various political parties, Bollywood celebrities expressed their shock and grief; many recalling moments when they got a chance to interact with her.

“Ek atyant dukhat samachar! Ek bahut hi prabal rajnitigya, ek milansaar vyaktitwa. Atma ki shanti ke liye, prarthana (An extremely sad news. A strong politician, a friendly personality. Prayers for the departed soul),” Amitabh Bachchan wrote on Twitter.

Veteran singer Lata Mangeskar wrote that Sushma Swaraj was a ” graceful and honest” leader. “Deeply shocked and saddened to hear about Sushma Swaraj ji’s sudden demise. A graceful and honest leader, a sensitive and selfless soul, a keen understanding of music and poetry and a dear friend. Our former external minister will be remembered fondly,” she tweeted.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap wrote, “Rest in peace @SushmaSwaraj ji. You were the most amazing parliamentarian and the minister and always there for your constituents . I will miss you and am sure we all will miss you .”

Actor turned politician Hema Malini wrote, “Sushma Swaraj ji is no more.A big loss to our nation. Personally,she was always a good friend, philosopher & guide throughout my years in Parliament.Soft spoken yet firm, always empathetic to people’s problems, she was unique in many ways &endeared herself to the public always.”

Akshay Kumar called Sushma Swaraj ” a dynamic leader” and “someone who was unanimously admired and respected by all.”

Swara Bhaskar called her a ” A brilliant parliamentarian, a fine bilingual orator, a humane foreign minister”.

Parineeti Chopra shared that Sushma Swaraj also hailed from Ambala Cantt like her and despite being from a small town made it big.

Anupam Kher, who is currently in New York, went live on Twitter and said he couldn’t deal with the news( of Sushma’s passing away).

“A huge loss for India- An outstanding orator, an absolute patriot, a tall leader @SushmaSwaraj Ji is no more. As an Ext Affairs minister she was always accessible to every Indian who was in need of help. My deepest condolences to the family, loved ones & millions of followers.” Actor Riteish Deshmukh wrote.

Karan Johar hailed Swaraj as ” an amazing leader, orator and minister” and expressed condolence to her family.

Randeep Hooda called her “a tall leader and a doer” and said, “A tall leader and a doer #sushmaswaraj .. never met her but feel saddened by her passing away .. an end of a chapter where Indians across the world felt there is someone looking after them .. #RIPSushmaswaraj .. Om Shanti.”

Shabana Azmi stated that despite ” political differences”, she shared an “extremely cordial relationship” with Swaraj.

Thanking Sushma Swaraj for her “magnificent defence of their rights in the Lok Sabha”, veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar wrote, “Deeply saddened by Sushma ji’s demise.The Music Fraternity will be indebted to her for magnificent defence of their rights in the Lok Sabha . You were an exceptional person Sushmaji. We will always remain thankful to you.”

Anushka Sharma wrote, “saddened to hear about the sudden demise of Sushma Swaraj ji . May her soul rest in peace.”
