Reacting to move by the Congress, NC and PDP to form an alliance to form government in J&K, the BJP on Wednesday said the alliance of convenience for their own political survival would not be acceptable to the people of the state.

In a statement, BJP state spokesman Brigadier Anil Gupta said the single-region-single-religion “unholy alliance” supported by the “opportunistic Congress” was likely to lead to trifurcation of the state and push it into an inter-regional turmoil.

Referring to the BJP’s tie-up with former separatist Sajjad Lone and some dissenting MLAs from other parties, Gupta said a third Front in J&K was necessary to safeguard democracy in view of the prevailing political environment in the state.

He said the so-called mainstream regional political parties of the state had failed to uphold the virtues of democracy by boycotting the biggest democratic exercise undertaken by the state after the lapse of a decade.

“Rather than encouraging the people to participate in the municipal and panchayat elections to strengthen grass root level democracy in the state, those political parties tried all the tricks in their bag to scuttle the process to promote their agenda of dynastic and separatist politics,” said Gupta.

He said the successful conduct of these elections without any violence and large scale participation by the people had not only sent shockwaves across the leadership of the parties but also sent a strong message to them that the people of this state had firm faith in democracy. “These parties have not only been rejected by the people, which was evident by large number of their cadre contesting the elections despite party diktat to the contrary, but have also lost much political space and their acceptance across the state,” Gupta said.

The founding member of PDP, Muzzaffar Hussain Baig, admitted that PDP had failed to take the middle ground route for which it was founded after the failure of NC in the state. “The frank admission of a very senior politician of the state clearly explains the prevailing political scenario and the urgent need for an alternative,” said Gupta.
