BJP-RSS opposed Tricolour, now wants to change Constitution: Congress ramps up attack

Opposition parties term electoral bond scheme as biggest scam of independent India

Ramping up its attack on the BJP over Karnataka BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde’s remarks against the Constitution, the Opposition Congress on Monday said that the ruling party wants to change Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru’s Constitution.

“The BJP-RSS even opposed the Tricolor! The Ashoka Chakra in the tricolor was also opposed. And now they want to change the Constitution made by Dr. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and other esteemed leaders,” said Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Last week, Hegde had said that the Congress party amended the Constitution to downgrade Hinduism. He asked people to give the BJP 400-plus seats in order to change the Constitution.

“You all must help the BJP to win over 400 seats. Why does the BJP need 400 plus seats? Congress leaders in the past made changes to the Constitution and made it in a way that it doesn’t put Hinduism in front,” Hegde had said.

While the BJP distanced itself from Hegde’s remarks, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the issue.

“Narendra Modi’s silence on a BJP MP’s statement of ‘changing the Constitution’ is dangerous,” Gandhi remarked.

He further said that the upcoming Lok Sabha election is now between two ideologies – “Sanvidhan (Constitution) or Sangh Ka Vidhan (Laws of RSS), social justice or exploitation, secularism or communalism, civil rights or helpless people, freedom of speech or fearful silence, Love or hate, diversity or monopoly, just order or dictatorial injustice.”

The Gandhi scion further said that changing the Constitution meant pushing the country towards slavery.

“Changing the Constitution, India’s most precious heritage obtained from the struggle for independence, means pushing the country towards slavery. The decision about the future of the coming generations is now in your hands,” he added.
